Biography
Alistair Grant was born in London but raised in the small fishing port of Etaples, which was his mother's hometown in North-East Normandy. Etaples played a significant role in shaping both his personal and creative identity.
Initially, Grant enrolled at Birmingham College of Art and studied there until 1943. The college provided him with a traditional education that placed great emphasis on still-life drawing. World War II disrupted his training and Grant servied in Egypt during the war. Afterwards, Grant returned to art school, specifically the Royal College, where he received instruction from notable figures such as Corel Weight and Ruskin Spear. He developed a strong interest in printmaking and honed his skills in lithography under Edwin la Dell and etching under Robert Austin. Printmaking became an integral part of Grant's life, and he remained closely associated with the discipline. He joined the printmaking department of the Royal College in 1955, where he dedicated 35 years to his work. From 1970 to 1990, he served as the Head of Department and held the position of Professor of Printmaking (Emeritus) from 1984 to 1990.
While many may primarily recognize Grant as a printmaker, he always considered himself first and foremost a painter.
